Bold, authoritative and pioneering -the Nation Media Group has dominated Kenya’s public life for nearly half a century with its ground-breaking reporting and analysis that has captivated the psyche of millions in Kenya and the region.

The history of the Group goes back to 1959 when His Highness the Aga Khan, then a student at Harvard University, set up the Nation to champion the interests of the black African majority in the run up to independence from colonial rule in 1963.

The Aga Khan acquired an existing publication, Baragumu and renamed it Taifa, thus the Nation was born. The daily nation, which was to later become the flagship product of the Group, hit the streets about one year later in 1960.

These were tough times for the media industry, especially for one that provided objective and independent news and information to a people that had become increasingly alienated by the colonial government’s official segregation policy. But with focus, courage and the unswerving support of The Aga Khan, the Nation weathered the storm breaking even for the first time in 1968.

Three years later in 1973, the Aga Khan made the landmark decision to include the locals in the company ownership and therefore the Nation was publicly listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange. The number and quality of shareholders has grown over the years and today it has nearly 7,500 shareholders.

The 1980s and 90s were marked by a harsh political environment that did not encourage growth and investment. Media houses critical of the regime were often threatened with closure and journalists who were deemed to be antiestablishment were detained without trial or threatened with harsh consequences.

The Group weathered the dark period by sticking to strong editorial and ethical standards. Its profits were on a leap on a year on year basis.

The Group’s attempts to go multimedia were consistently thwarted by the government which viewed it with suspicion because of its critical analysis of the political situation.

On the eve of the century, another landmark achievement was made when the Nation acquired broadcasting license which allowed it to operate television and radio. Soon after, we launched Nation TV (now NTV and Nation FM (Easy FM).

The Group has also diversified its portfolio by acquisitions in Uganda, where it acquired the Monitor Publications Ltd in 2000 and Tanzania, which it moved into, in 2004 as controlling shareholders of the Mwananchi Communications Ltd. For careers please click the following link;
